Senga´s Setbesuch // Visit the TVD Set – Informations & Pics
Deutsch:
Der diesjährige Urlaub sollte eine Rundreise mit einem Mietwagen durch USA’s Osten sein. Unter anderem standen 3 Tage Atlanta auf dem Plan und eher zufällig als geplant stellte ich fest, dass in der Nähe der Drehort von Vampire Diaries war.
Also plante ich glatt einen Tag ein, um nach Covington zu fahren, und fing an zu recherchieren, was genau man dort wo anschauen konnte.
Covington ist ein sehr kleiner Ort ca. 45min östlich von Atlanta gelegen. In der Mitte des Ortes, wo auch das Rathaus steht, befindet sich der ein Laden, in dem ein Steuerberatungsbüro angesiedelt ist, an dem das bekannte “Mystic Grill” Schild angebracht ist.
Schon beim Einbiegen in die Clark Street, und obwohl ich wusste, dass das nur der Drehort ist, war ich total aufgeregt. Direkt vor dem Mystic Grill geparkt und ausgestiegen, hat man sofort das Gefühl, als wenn jeden Augenblick Elena um die Ecke biegt und man auf einmal mitten drin in der Geschichte ist!
Der gesamte Platz wird des öfteren in der Serie gezeigt, neben dem Rathaus und dem Grill, ist auch der Platz in der Mitte schon öfter verwendet worden. Leider war an dem Tag Memorial Day in den USA und dort fand eine Veranstaltung der Einwohner statt daher wollte ich nicht komplett frech da herumlaufen und aus allen Richtungen Bilder knipsen. Aber wir sind einmal um den Platz rumgelaufen und sahen dann auch das Gebäude, wo in Staffel 1 Damon mit Vicky draufstand. Oder wo später Elena und Luka den Moonstone vermeintlich zerstört haben. Dieses Gebäude befindet sich in der Washington Street, die direkt gegenüber der Clark Street ist, wo der Grill steht.
Auf dem Weg dorthin sieht man das Café Scoops, wo angeblich die Cast immer gern abhängt. Das war an dem Tag allerdings geschlossen, wie so ziemlich alle Läden dort an dem Tag.
Den Platz einmal umrundet, stand noch die Suche nach Elena’s Haus auf dem Programm. Dieses befindet sich in der Floyd Street 2104. Es ist vom Mystic Grill aus in ca. 5 Minuten zu Fuss erreichbar. Das Haus stand zum Verkauf da, bzw. zum vermieten. Es wird, soweit ich weiß auch nur für die Außenaufnahmen genutzt, die Innenaufnehmen sind im Studio in Atlanta. Ich könnte mir gut vorstellen, dass wenn das Haus wirklich mal verkauft wird, dass dann auch Elena umzieht. Jetzt wo Jenna nicht mehr da ist, würde sich eine neue Wohnung anbieten.
In der selben Gegend sollte auch das Anwesen von den Lockwoods sein, ich hab’s aber auf Anhieb nicht erkannt bzw. gefunden und es soll wohl auch größer sein und nicht gleich erkennbar, daher hab ich mal Abstand davon genommen, da an dem Tag groß “herumzuschnüffeln”.
Ansonsten wirkt das Städtchen sehr amerikanisch und ruhig, keine weiteren Hinweise darauf, dass dort die Serie gedreht wird. Ich hatte erwartet, dass dort irgendwo vielleicht der eine oder andere Laden Poster o.Ä. verkauft, war aber nicht der Fall.
Bevor ich die Reise angetreten bin, hatte ich noch versucht herauszufinden, wo das Salvatore Anwesen ist. Dieses ist nördlich von Atlanta gelegen auf einem Privatgelände. In diversen Internet-Berichten hab ich aber gelesen, dass es nicht möglich ist, dort draufzugehen daher fiel das dann für mich aus, und ich hab mir lieber doch Atlanta selbst angeschaut, eine tolle Stadt übrigens!

We were planning on spending this year’s summer vacation on a road trip through the eastern United States. Among other things, 3 days of visiting Atlanta were on our agenda and I realized, more by accident than on purpose, that The Vampire Diaries were shot nearby.
I thus planned to take one day and visit Covington and started to research everything I could visit there.
Covington is a small town at about 45 minutes from Atlanta. In the town center, where you can also find the town hall, is the storefront, which is actually an accountant’s office, which is transformed by a sign into the renowned “Mystic Grill”.
Already when turning the corner of Clark Street and knowing fully well that this was only a set, I was extremely excited. Standing in front of the Mystic Grill you instantly get the feeling that Elena could turn the corner any minute and you could suddenly be completely immersed in the story.
The whole square is frequently visible on the show. Besides the town hall and the grill, the square itself has been used a number of times already. Unfortunately the day I was there was Memorial Day and the town held an event on the square, therefore I didn’t want to be rude and just run around taking pictures of everything. But we did walk around the square once and also saw the building that Damon and Vicky were standing on in season 1 and where Bonnie and Luca allegedly destroyed the moonstone. That building is on Washington Street, which is right across from Clark Street, where the grill is situated.
On the way, you pass by Café Scoops which is supposedly one of the cast’s favorite hangouts. But, as pretty much everything that day, the café was closed.
Having circled the square once, we set out to look for Elena’s house. It is situated at 2104 Floyd Street and is about a five minute walk from the Mystic Grill. The house was up for sale or rent, but as far as I know it’s only being used for exterior shots anyways, as the interiors are being filmed on a sound stage in Atlanta. I imagine that Elena will move, should the house actually be sold. Now that Jenna is gone, new living arrangements might be a good idea.
The Lockwood Mansion is supposed to be in that area as well, but I couldn’t find it (or at least recognize it) right away. Since I heard it was apparently bigger and quite unrecognizable, I decided to give up and not hunt around for it all day.
Other than that the town is very American and quiet and there are no real indications that it is being used as a set for a TV series. I had expected some stores to sell posters or the like, but that was not the case.
Before going on the trip, I had also tried to figure out where the Salvatore Boardinghouse is situated. It is on a private property north of Atlanta. I read in several reports on the internet that it is not possible to visit it, so I decided not to go there and instead visited Atlanta itself, which is a great city by the way!
